Amazon's New Directive: Employees To Work In Office 5 Days A Week From 2025

In a letter to employees shared on the company's website on Monday, CEO Andy Jassy highlighted that this transition is crucial for fostering innovation, collaboration, and connection among team

Starting next year, Amazon.com will implement a new policy requiring employees to work in company offices five days a week, a shift from the previously mandated three-day in-office schedule.

In a letter to employees shared on the company's website on Monday, CEO Andy Jassy highlighted that this transition is crucial for fostering innovation, collaboration, and connection among team members. He explained that the experience gained from the three-day mandate had reinforced the company's belief in the advantages of working onsite, underscoring the value of face-to-face interactions in driving progress and teamwork, reported Reuters.

Since the onset of the pandemic, numerous companies have permitted their employees to work remotely from home. However, in response to the evolving post-pandemic landscape, some technology companies now require their employees to return to the office two or three days each week.

Amazon, however, is taking a more rigorous approach than many of its competitors, particularly as the threat of COVID-19 has diminished. Employees told Reuters that Amazon has enforced stringent policies, requiring them to commute to offices that are sometimes far from their homes or even relocate to maintain their employment.

Moreover, employees who frequently failed to adhere to the existing three-day office mandate were told they were "voluntarily resigning" and were subsequently locked out of Amazon's systems. At present, it is unclear whether the new policy will be equally strict, as Amazon has yet to provide specific details. An employee Q&A shared with Reuters on Monday did not clarify the extent of the new mandate.

The new mandate requiring employees to return to the office has faced significant resistance from a vocal group of staff members. Many have argued that working from home is effective and saves time and money otherwise spent on commuting. Last May, employees at Amazon’s Seattle headquarters staged a walkout to protest changes to the company’s climate policy, recent layoffs, and the new return-to-office requirement, as per the report.

As part of its organisational restructuring, Amazon aims to increase the proportion of individual contributors relative to managers by at least 15 per cent by the end of the first quarter of 2025. In a recent Q&A, Amazon indicated that some roles might be deemed redundant as part of this restructuring, though specific details were not provided.

Additionally, Amazon is discontinuing a previous program that allowed employees to work remotely from any location for up to four months per year, according to the Q&A.
