Opinion | A New Dawn For Education: Budget 2024 And The Future Of Learning
The Union Budget of India, presented on July 23, 2024, has brought renewed focus on education, reminding us of the crucial role it plays in building a brighter future. This Budget is a welcome catalyst for positive change, aligning with the vision of the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) and National Curriculum Framework 2022 (NCF 2022).
India’s ancient education methodology, exemplified by the Gurukul system, emphasised holistic development, personal growth, and a deep understanding of knowledge. While our current system has evolved, it still faces challenges in fostering critical thinking, creativity, and a love for learning. NEP 2020 and NCF 2022 are crucial steps in bridging this gap, advocating for a more student-centric, experiential learning approach. This shift is essential for equipping students with the 21st-century skills they need to thrive in a dynamic world.

The 2024 Budget reflects this commitment to educational reform. A significant allocation of Rs 1.48 lakh crore has been earmarked for the education, employment, and skilling sector, highlighting its importance in the government’s vision for a prosperous and knowledgeable India. This represents an increase of around 30% over last year, demonstrating the government’s strong commitment to education.
The Budget also recognises the critical role of teachers in driving educational change. The allocation for upskilling teachers, providing them with access to cutting-edge technology and pedagogical approaches, is a significant step in ensuring quality teaching and learning.
The 2024 Budget signals a promising future for education in India. By embracing the vision of NEP 2020 and NCF 2022, and leveraging the opportunities presented by the Budget, we can empower students to become active learners, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens, fulfilling the potential of the ancient Gurukul system and forging a path towards a brighter, more knowledgeable tomorrow.
