Diesel Vehicles That Complete 10 Years On January 1, 2022, To Be Deregistered in Delhi

NGT had directed restricting registration and plying of diesel vehicles more than 10 years old and petrol vehicles more than 15 years old in Delhi NCR.

New Delhi: An order issued by the Delhi transport department said all diesel vehicles that would complete 10 years on January 1, 2022, would deregistered, PTI reported. A no objection certificate (NOC) would be issued so that they can be re-registered in other places, the order said.

However, diesel vehicles that have completed 15 years or more won't be issued NOC in compliance with directions issued by the National Green Tribunal (NGT).

"The department will deregister all such diesel vehicles in Delhi on January 1, 2022, which have completed or would be completing 10 years on that date," the order said.

The order comes after NGT's directions on restricting registration and plying of diesel vehicles more than 10 years old and petrol vehicles more than 15 years old in Delhi NCR.

The tribunal had said the deregistration of diesel vehicles that are 15 years old should be done on priority. The NGT had said the use of diesel in vehicles was highly toxic and carcinogenic and leads to untimely fatality.

The transport department order said that "accordingly, the department will deregister all such diesel vehicles in Delhi on January 1, 2022, which have completed or would be completing 10 years on that date".

The Delhi transport department order said NOC for diesel vehicles, which are 10 years old, and petrol vehicles, which are 15 years old, could be issued for any place in the country.

"This will be subject to condition that NOC will not be issued for the places which are identified by states as restricted area for re-registration," the order said.

People will also have the option to convert their 10-year-old diesel or 15-year-old petrol vehicles to electric ones if they want to continue using them, the order said.

Those opting for this, will have to retrofit such vehicles with empanelled electric kits through agencies approved by the Delhi government.

In 2015, the NGT had banned all diesel vehicles over 10 years old from plying in Delhi-NCR roads.
