Shradh 2023: Significance, Rituals & Shradh Dates Calendar — All You Need To Know

Pitru Paksha stands as a testament to the reverence & commitment that Hindu culture holds for its ancestors. It's a time to remember & connect with the past, seeking blessings for a prosperous future.

Pitru Paksha, also known as Shradh or the fortnight for ancestors, is a significant period in the Hindu lunar calendar dedicated to paying homage to one's forefathers. This sacred observance falls within the dark fortnight (Krishna Paksha) of the Ashwin month. Pitru Paksha extends from the full moon day (Purnima) of Bhadrapada to the new moon day (Amavasya) of Ashwin. During this fortnight, various rituals like Tarpan, Pindadan, Shradh, and Panchbali Karma are performed to seek the blessings of ancestors.

In accordance with religious beliefs, performing these rituals during Pitru Paksha helps to pacify the souls of departed ancestors, thereby freeing them from the cycle of rebirth. It is believed that this period brings peace, prosperity, and growth to the family, ensuring the lineage continues to thrive. Apart from Pitru Paksha, similar rituals are observed on every Amavasya (new moon) to please one's ancestors. When the ancestors are displeased, they are said to curse the family, leading to discord, unrest, lineage issues, or infertility. Hence, Pitru Paksha offers a unique opportunity to seek redemption from Pitru Dosha.
