When Is Muharram 2024?

The lunar Islamic calendar or Hijri calendar has 354 days and 12 months in a year. Currently, Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar, is ongoing. The exact date of Muharram will be determined after the sighting of the moon. However, according to the Islamic calendar, the possible date for Muharram 2024 is July 7. It is important to note that various Islamic sects, such as Shia and Sunni, celebrate Muharram differently. Some communities fast on the 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, which may be on July 17.

Thus, Muharram is expected to begin on July 7, 2024, while Yaum-e-Ashura is expected to fall on July 17, 2024. However, the exact dates will be determined after the sighting of the moon.

History Of Muharram:

For Muslims, Muharram is the month of mourning. It is observed in remembrance of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain and his companions. According to Islamic beliefs, in the year 61 Hijri (680 AD), Imam Hussain, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, and about 72 of his companions were martyred in Karbala, Iraq, on the 10th day of Muharram. Therefore, this day is observed as Yaum-e-Ashura.

On this day, people wear black clothes and take out Taziya processions in various cities. The Taziya is considered a symbol of Imam Hussain's grave.

Significance Of Muharram:

Muharram marks the start of the Islamic New Year, a time of rejuvenation and spiritual reflection. Because the word Muharram means 'not permitted' or 'forbidden,' Muslims refrain from participating in activities such as combat and instead utilise it as a time of prayer and introspection. For Muslims, the events of Karbala and the martyrdom of Imam Hussein are extremely important. Imam Hussein and his companions' sacrifices are considered a sign of resistance to oppression and the value of standing up for justice, even in the face of death.
