The Andhra Pradesh High Court on Wednesday rejected the bail petition of MLC Anantha Uday Bhaskar alias Ananta Babu in the murder case of his former driver Veedhi Subrahmanyam. Anantha Babu had sought bail on the grounds that the police failed to file the chargesheet even after 90 days after his arrest.

Last month, a single-judge High Court bench refused default bail to the MLC. The accused had approached the High Court after a lower court rejected his bail petitions thrice.

The prosecution argued that the police filed the chargesheet within the stipulated time. However, the same was sent back by the court on technical grounds. A division bench dismissed the bail petition after hearing both sides.

Bhaskar is currently lodged in Rajamahendravaram jail. An SC, ST special court had recently extended his judicial custody. He was given three days of bail in August so that he could attend his mother's funeral.

Meanwhile, Subrahmanyam's family members alleged that there was a possibility of the politician tampering with evidence with the support of the ruling party and filed a petition in the court, saying that the police were not investigating Anantha Babu's case properly.

They requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi that the murder case be handed over to the Central Investigation Agency (CBI).

MLC Anantha Babu was arrested in May for the murder of his former driver V Subrahmanyam. Anantha was suspended by the ruling YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) in May. He had pushed Subrahmanyam during an argument, resulting in his fall and death on the night of May 19.

The MLC also informed police that he inflicted injuries on Subrahmanyam's body to present his death as a road accident. However, the driver's family refused to believe his version and complained to the police.
