Andhra Pradesh: Heavy Rains Trigger Floods In Anantapur

Affected people were relocated to temporary relief camps built at a nearby government school and temple by local officials.

Andhra Pradesh's Anantapur town experienced floods triggered by the heavy rains that lashed the region since Tuesday. Water from overflowing lakes entered the houses of 12 colonies in the city and five colonies in Rudrampet panchayat, forcing hundreds of people to evacuate their homes.

Roads in the affected areas became rivulets, and in some places, homes were submerged by three feet of water. Affected people were relocated to temporary relief camps built at a nearby government school and temple by local officials. Five rehabilitation centres have been set up in Anantapur.

Anantapur, Annamayya, Palnadu, Chittoor, Sathya Sai, Anakapalli, Palnadu, Vizianagaram and East Godavari districts received heavy rains in the last 24 hours. Kasipadu of Pedakurapadu mandal of Palnadu district received the highest rainfall of 12.7 cm on Wednesday. In the last 24 hours, 6.2 cm of rain was recorded in Ananthapuram, 5.7 in Tamballapalle, 6.4 in Raptadu, 6.4 in Kooderu, 6.3 in K. Kotapadu, 5.4 in Kuttagulla, 6.9 cm in Punganur and 5.1 cm in Rajam.

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said that the surface trough is continuing from interior Karnataka through Marathwada and Vidarbha to southwest Madhya Pradesh. Along with this, it is said that the retreat of the southwest monsoon has started. According to the current weather conditions, a low-pressure system is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal, said IMD.

The Regional Meteorological Center (Hyderabad) said that light to moderate rains will occur in Medak, Sangareddy, Rangareddy, Hyderabad, Medchal, Vikarabad, Nagar Kurnool, Mahbubnagar, Kamareddy, Sircilla, Wanaparthy, Narayanpet, Gadwal districts on Thursday. 

The weather department officials said heavy rains would occur in several districts of Telangana till October 15. A yellow alert has been issued in some of the districts.
