Former First Lady Barbara Bush dies

Washington D.C. [United States], April 18 (ANI): Ailing Former First Lady of the United States Barbara Bush died here at the age of 92 on Tuesday.

She leaves behind her husband and former President George H.W. Bush, five children, fourteen grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.

Bush family spokesperson Jim Mc Grath confirmed her death and said the official funeral will be announced as soon as is practical.

The former first lady had decided to be in comfort care than seeking medical assistance.

On Monday, Jim Mc Grath took to his Twitter account to quote a statement issued by the office of George H.W. Bush, to inform that "following a series of hospitalisations, and after consulting her family and doctors, Mrs. Bush, now age 92, has decided not to seek additional medical treatment and will instead focus on comfort care. It will not surprise those who know her that Barbara Bush has been a rock in the face of her failing health, worrying not for herself thanks to her abiding faith-but for others".

Bush was born as Barbara Pierce on June 8, 1925, in New York City. She married George H W Bush in 1945 and served as the First Lady of the United States from 1989 to 1993. She served as the Second Lady of the United States from 1981 to 1989.

While Barbara Bush was First Lady of the United States, she worked to advance the cause of universal literacy and founded the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy.

Barbara Bush was one of only two First Ladies who was also the mother of a US president. Her son George W Bush served as the US President. The other was Abigail Adams, wife of John Adams and mother of John Quincy Adams. (ANI)
