Angela Merkel loses after leading Germany for 16 years

After nearly 16 years, the conservative-led rule finally ended as Angela Merkel narrowly lost the elections to the Social Democrats. The former mayor of Hamburg, 63-year-old Olaf Scholz, would become the fourth post-war SPD chancellor after Willy Brandt, Helmut Schmidt, and Gerhard Schroeder.
