Hindu Population Share Down, Muslim Share Up Between 1950-2015: New Conflict Amid Elections After EAC-PM Report

According to a report released by the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister of India, the Hindu population share in the country decreased by about 8% in the 65 years between 1950 and 2015, while that of the minorities population increased during the period. The population share of Hindus in the country has seen a decline of 7.82% between 1950 and 2015. While the Muslim population share increased from 9.84% to 14.09%, the share of Christian population increased from 2.24% to 2.36%. The population share of the Sikh community in the country also increased from 1.24% to 1.85%. 

Barring Jains and Parsis, the report said, all religious minorities in India saw a rise in the share of their population in the 65-year period under review.
