India is the land of farmers. It is called that because most Indians are directly or indirectly involved in agricultural activities. So it would not be wrong to say that farmers are the backbone of our economy. They are also respectfully called "Annadata". 

When there is a bumper crop, the price of the harvest falls and at times the farmers have to sell their produce to the government or to middlemen at throwaway prices.
