Its ancient name was Lodi-ana, after the Lodi clan. Situated on the banks of the Sutlej River, the city was founded in 1480 by the Lodi dynasty of Delhi. A major battle was fought in Ludhiana. The major trade here is textile manufacturing, engineering centres of woollen garments, machine tools, mopeds, and sewing machines.
