Anti-Sterlite protests in Tuticorin: All you want to know
Eleven people were killed as Tamil Nadu police opened fire on protesters. These protesters were raising voice against Sterlite’s industrial plant in Thoothukudi (Tuticorin) on Tuesday. People are demanding to shut the plant down as the pollution due to the plant is causing serious health issues. The protest gained momentum when the company announced expansion.
The plant can produce 400,000 tonnes of copper cathode per year. It is being run by Vedanta's Sterlite Copper unit. The company is planning to double the capacity to 800,000 tonnes.
