A video of a Komodo dragon hunting its prey has gone viral on the internet. The manner in which it attacked a deer and then swallowed it alive in one gulp has the internet wondering about its raw power and survival in the animal kingdom

The video, posted on Instagram by animals_powers, starts with a komodo dragon attacking the antelope. The deer is not able to put up any resistance as the Komodo sinks it razor-sharp teeth into the deer’s flesh. In a few seconds, the Komodo dragon gulps the entire animal in one go with its powerful jaws and stretchy stomach.

"OMG Dangerous Komodo dragon," read the caption of the post. Since being shared, the video has amassed 8,148 likes and several comments.

"Must have some serious acid burning enzymes in his stomach to dissolve entire bodies," wrote one user.

Another user wrote, "That's a lot more painful than it seems... His leg is small so the pain is excruciating!"

Speaking about how the Komodo dragon digests food another user wrote, "Their meals are digested through a combination of stomach acid and bacteria. Once digested, the Komodo dragon will vomit up a pellet of all the parts it could not break down. This includes some of the bones, fur, and hooves of its prey."

Komodo dragons are large reptiles have strong jaw and throat muscles that enable them to consume significant amounts of food quickly. Their stomachs can expand to allow them to eat up to 80 percent of their body weight. Interestingly,  Komodos can eject the contents of their stomachs to decrease their weight and flee if threatened.
