Telangana minister KT Rama Rao assured on Monday that the state government would take strict action after a postgraduate medical student of Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) in Hyderabad allegedly died by suicide after being ragged by her senior.
"Whoever has done injustice to Dr. Preethi, be it Saif, Sanjay or anyone else, we will not spare them. We will make sure that they are punished as per law," Rama Rao said, according to IANS.
KTR expressed his heartfelt condolences to the family of Preethi and assured them that the Telangana government would stand by them.
According to an IANS report, addressing a public meeting in the Hanamkonda district, Rama Rao slammed the opposition parties for what he called politicising every small issue.
Meanwhile, ministers Satyavati Rathod and E. Dayakar Rao visited Preethi's house and consoled her family. The ministers assured the family that the guilty will not be spared. Also, they assured the girl's family that the government would support them.
Minister Dayakar Rao said while the state government has announced Rs 10 lakh ex-gratia to the family, he would give Rs 20 lakh on his behalf. He claimed that Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao was considering the proposal to provide government job to Preethi's brother and sister.
Preethi, a first-year student of postgraduate (MD) program in the department of anesthesia at KMC in Warangal, succumbed at a hospital in Hyderabad on Sunday night, five days after she allegedly took a lethal injection.
Meanwhile, Warangal police have arrested her senior, M.A. Saif, who allegedly targeted Preethi with insulting comments. The police said the targeted harassment of Preethi by her senior could have driven her to attempt suicide.
Saif was booked for abetment to suicide and also charged under the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act and the Anti-Ragging Act.
