Telangana: Six Students Suspended From Suryapet Medical College For Ragging

The students were charged under four distinct sections of the Anti-Ragging Act based on the victim's allegation.

Hyderabad: Six students from a government medical college in Suryapet in Telangana have been suspended for ragging a junior student.

The six students are from the 2019-20 batch and are currently studying their MBBS second year. The committee revealed their names -- J Mahender, G Shashank, P Shravan, A Ranjit Sai, K Harish and B Sujeet.

On the night of January 1, police have received a call from the medical college. A first-year medical student, Sai Kumar, dialed to the nearby police station to complain about the ragging he was forced by the seniors. The police reached the campus and rescued the student.

The students were charged under four distinct sections of the Anti-Ragging Act based on the victim's allegation. The complainant said that a group of students barged into his room, ordered him to take off his clothes and videotaped him on their phones. They also attempted to shave his head.

The student claimed that he was tormented physically and mentally for two hours. After hiding in another room, he later managed to escape from them and called up his father.

Health Minister T Harish Rao has ordered an investigation into the incident.

During the investigation, police discovered that the college officials had not constituted an anti-ragging committee as required by law.  Lack of supervision by the staff concerned led to the incident, an officer stated as quoted by IANS.
