In a dramatic demonstration, a woman from Hyderabad sat in a pothole filled with muddy water on Thursday to protest against the state of the roads in her locality. The incident, which took place in Anandnagar Colony, Nagole, has captured significant attention on social media, with a video of her protest going viral.
The woman, whose identity remains undisclosed, explained that her protest aimed to highlight the severe problems faced by residents due to the numerous potholes along the stretch from Nagole to Uppal. She emphasised the urgent need for municipal authorities to address these hazards to ensure the safety of pedestrians and other road users.
Holding placards that read, "We want safe roads...won't you??", several residents joined her in solidarity. The woman recounted how her children had suffered injuries from falling into these potholes, stressing the daily dangers posed by the neglected infrastructure.
"I have counted, there are 30 potholes between Uppal and Nagole. This is pathetic and I could not take it anymore. We are facing this problem everyday. I purposely sat in it. We request (civic body) to solve this issue," the protestor said.
"Instead of silently suffering, people should join me in this protest," she urged.
Despite her repeated appeals to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) to repair the roads, she claimed that her requests had been ignored. When she raised the issue with civic officials, they assured her that a budget had been allocated for road repairs but failed to provide a specific timeline for the work to commence.
The protest drew the attention of local authorities, and after a few minutes, traffic police officers arrived to persuade the woman to end her demonstration. The local corporator intervened, facilitating a telephonic conversation between the woman and the municipal commissioner. During the call, the commissioner reiterated that funds had been allocated to address the road conditions.
The woman eventually left the site, confirmed an official at the Nagole police station.
Taking to X, a BJP worker shared the video of the protest and said, "@INCTelangana ignores basic infrastructure in Hyderabad's Uppal area. A woman sits in pothole slush, pleading for @GHMCOnline action. Complaints mount, yet the party hides behind #election codes."
