Telangana BJP President and MP Bandi Sanjay Kumar was detained by the police on Tuesday night triggering protests from his party workers.
Several BJP supporters staged a protest outside the hospital where Bandi Sanjay was taken for medical examination on Wednesday. In a short video clip shared by ANI, the protesters were seen trying to stop the vehicle from leaving the premises.
In the video, protesters were seen clinging on to Bandi Sanjay's SUV in an attempt to prevent it from leaving while the police came with 'lathis' to chase them away.
Bandi Sanjay was detained from his residence in Karimnagar ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to the state. The police, however, gave no reasons for the detention. According to ANI, he was taken to Bommala Ramaram police station in the Nalgonda district.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has condemned the arrest of Bandi Sanjay, terming it as illegal. They also alleged that fear has gripped Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government in the state.
BJP's national general secretary B L Santosh tweeted that the BRS government has touched raw nerve by arresting BJP state president and MP Bandi Sanjay. "This will be the last nail on their political existence," he wrote.
Santosh said that rattled, riddled with corruption charges and facing electoral reverses, BRS and its leadership is a sinking boat.
Meanwhile, BJP general secretary in-charge of Telangana, Tarun Chug, in a statement, said that the arrest of Bandi Sanjay is politically motivated and is the result of a 'filthy vendetta' which is rooted in the cells of BRS.
"The blatant misuse of police machinery to intimidate opposition leaders in the state is the pattern followed by the Telangana government," IANS quoted Chug as saying.
