Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang called upon Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani at the Nvidia Summit 2024 in Mumbai and discussed how they can help India transform into a centre of not just IT but a centre of AI. Nvidia is quite keen on building the AI infrastructure in India and making it emerge as the top dog in this global race of advanced technology. Reliance is leading the race in India with its top notch resources at disposal to build the AI infrastructure and now Nvidia's interest has got everyone wondering why the US chipmaker is so eager for India.
Huang, during the interaction, asked Ambani, “No one has helped India become hi-tech like you have. I know you have deep aspirations to make India deep tech. What motivates you?” Ambani while responding to this hinted at Reliance's aspirations and said, “When you are in India, I have got to share my version of what Nvidia meant to me. There is an important word linked to it – Vidya in Hindi which means knowledge. We are determined to make the best LLM in Hindi."
He added, "Our first principle is what you are driving in terms of the knowledge revolution and converting it into the intelligence revolution. We are at the doorsteps of the intelligence age."
Why Is Nvidia Interested In India?
The US chipmaker is betting big on the world’s most populous country, especially after its collaboration with companies like Reliance Industries, Infosys, and Tech Mahindra. India is quickly becoming a key hub for Nvidia’s global AI ambitions, thanks to its fast-growing digital economy and expanding technological aspirations.
India is rapidly emerging as a significant force in AI, with industries such as agriculture, education, and manufacturing embracing the technology to enhance efficiency and productivity. While it currently represents a smaller revenue stream for global tech giants like NVIDIA, Microsoft, and Meta, India’s growing economy presents considerable potential for future expansion.

One of the reasons why these tech giants are inclined to use India as a base for operations is due to the geopolitical tensions between the US and China, which complicate the business.
During a recent meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Huang highlighted India’s significance in the AI arena, describing it as “India’s time.” Although India’s AI infrastructure is still in the early stages of development, the government is making substantial investments, dedicating $1.2 billion to the IndiaAI Mission to build data centers and promote the commercialization of AI technologies. Huang suggested that if India can tackle these challenges effectively, it could harness the potential to excel in large language models (LLMs) on a global scale, thereby establishing itself as a frontrunner in this new era of artificial intelligence.
If India emerges as the top dog in the AI race then Nvidia's contributions will be quite rewarding. It will open a horizon of opportunities, help it get a massive user base and have an unthinkable amount of dataset at its disposal which it can use to train its own AI models on.
