New Delhi: Handset maker Vivo on Monday announced it will provide 100 Vivo smartphones worth Rs 10 lakh, in a bid to support the education of 100 underprivileged children, in partnership with Protean. Apart from the smartphones, the handset manufacturer will also provide a cash scholarship worth Rs 1.5 lakh for these kids under the new phase of its "Vivo For Education' programme in the country.

In line with the central government's objective to support education, Vivo's programme intends to bridge the social and fiscal divide and support students from low-income families to continue their education. As per their programme, the children will be provided with a smartphone that can help them achieve an enriching learning experience through online distance learning amid social distancing and challenging times due to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic.

“In this time of distance learning, smartphones are a lifeline to students. As a brand, we strongly believe that technology can simplify work, help education and knowledge acquisition, support passions and beyond. We are delighted to find ways to help more and more students realize their dreams. We endeavour to bring joy in their learning and a smile on their faces," Yogendra Sriramula, Director, Brand Strategy, Vivo India, said in a statement.

Under this leg of the initiative, students who are studying in standard 11 will be provided with a Vivo smartphone and cash scholarship. Earlier, the handset maker supported the education of 100 underprivileged students by providing them smartphones for their online education. The smartphone maker had also provided a cash scholarship worth Rs 8 lakh to over 65 students under the previous leg of its education initiative.
