The US government has recently issued a new directive as per which all mobile phones in the region there will be mandated to be compatible with hearing aids soon. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced a new mandate requiring smartphone manufacturers to ensure their devices are compatible with hearing aids by 2026. This move aims to improve accessibility for individuals with hearing impairments.
The FCC has also set different transition timelines for wireless providers — nationwide carriers have 30 months to comply, while smaller, non-nationwide providers are given 42 months.
FCC Mandates
In addition to hearing aid compatibility, the FCC now mandates that smartphones must offer simpler Bluetooth pairing options. The commission also warned manufacturers against using proprietary Bluetooth systems that could complicate connections with hearing aids, stressing the need for universal compatibility.
Smartphone manufacturers are now required to meet specific volume control standards and clearly indicate hearing aid compatibility on product packaging and websites. This new regulation aims to enhance accessibility for users with hearing impairments.
The FCC's mandate follows Apple's recent announcement that its AirPods Pro 2 would support hearing aid functionality. Apple received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to classify the AirPods Pro 2 as an over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aid.
Apple’s hearing aid feature operates as a software-based mobile medical app, which can be customized through an iOS device like an iPhone. The feature uses data from the iOS HealthKit to tailor the hearing aid function to the user’s specific needs. Once configured, the AirPods Pro can amplify sounds for adults with mild-to-moderate hearing loss, providing a more accessible and affordable hearing solution.
