When people go to buy AC in the market, there are many questions in their mind. One of these is which star ratings to buy AC. A common notion is that a one-star AC consumes more power than a two-star AC and a five-star AC consumes the least power.
In such a situation, it is necessary to know what is the meaning of these star ratings. Actually, this works on the formula of energy efficiency. It is depends on the cooling output and power input in the AC. For example, a one ton AC consumes 3516 watts per hour.
The rating is decided by the energy efficiency ratio.
Every AC has an Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER) mentioned on it. If EER from 2.7 to 2.9, is mentioned on an AC, then it is a one-star rating, 2.9 to 3.09 is two stars, 3.1 to 3.29 is three stars, 3.3 to 3.49 is four stars, and rating above 3.5 is 5-stars. The cooling output and input power of the AC should be calculated to determine the energy efficiency ratio. This can be checked while buying the AC, which is written on the plate. For this, if you divide the cooling output by the power input, you can get the rating.

Know the AC ratings
Since all ACs are of one ton and their cooling output is 3516 watts. This output will give the division of the input. For example, if an AC is taking an input power of 1250 watts, then if you divide 1250 in 3516, the result is 2.00. If you see it in the EER table, then you will find 2.00 as a one-star rating. Hence this AC is of one star rating. Similarly, if the input power of AC is 11750 watts, then dividing by 3516 will give 2.99. Looking at the table, 2.9 to 3.09 rating is a two-star rating. In this way the rating of all stars can be calculated.
The less input power the AC takes, the higher will be its star rating. The power consumption increases with the input power. Therefore, AC with higher rating consumes less power.
