Suno is an AI-powered music generation platform capable of composing unique songs based on text input. It was introduced in July 2023 during its transition to open beta, inviting users to join its Discord channel for testing. Subsequently, it offered music generation through its web interface. In December 2023, a collaboration with Microsoft led to the addition of an extension for Copilot, allowing Chatbot users to create songs.
A recent report from the Rolling Stones delved into Suno's intricate workings and its overarching vision. According to the report, Suno exclusively produces original music based on straightforward text prompts. Upon inputting the prompt, the AI swiftly generates a 15-second song in under a minute. The platform offers both free and paid subscription tiers — Pro and Premier. Paid subscribers enjoy commercial rights to their compositions, whereas free users are restricted from monetising the songs. Currently, the Pro tier starts at $10 (approximately Rs 830) per month.
How Is Suno Avoiding Copyright Strike
The report pointed out that Suno employs its proprietary AI model for music composition while relying on OpenAI's ChatGPT for lyrics and song titles. Despite being a US-based startup, Suno has maintained secrecy regarding the architecture and specifics of its AI model, including the source of its training data. This opacity raises concerns, especially in light of the music industry's apprehensions about AI models potentially using copyrighted materials for training and generating deepfake songs resembling real artists' voices.
To navigate this delicate issue, Suno takes a cautious approach by refraining from producing music imitating existing artists. If a prompt suggests such a style, the AI platform declines to generate music. The report also mentioned Suno's ongoing communication with major music labels. On February 23, Suno unveiled its V3 Alpha model to Pro and Premier users, boasting enhanced capabilities in creating more realistic and authentic music. Free users, on the other hand, have access only to the V1 and V2 models.
