A recent study conducted by Onsurity, a monthly subscription-based employee healthcare benefits platform, in collaboration with the Knowledge Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), has shed light on the health issues faced by Indian tech professionals due to their work. The study, titled "Burying the Burnout: Decoding the Health Challenges of India’s Tech Geniuses," brings attention to the significant impact of long work hours on the well-being of these professionals.
52.5 Work Hours Per Week
The findings of the study, claimed to be conducted among over 300 tech employees across the country, indicate that a substantial 43 per cent of Indian tech professionals are grappling with health concerns directly related to their work. One of the major contributors to these health issues is the demanding work schedule, with more than 50 per cent of tech professionals working an average of 52.5 hours per week, which exceeds the national average of 47.7 hours per week.
Among the health problems reported by these professionals, working late hours has been identified as a significant factor affecting their well-being. A staggering 55 per cent of respondents expressed that their health is adversely affected by working late, resulting in various concerns such as acidity, gut problems, back and neck pain, disrupted sleep cycles, muscle stiffness, eyesight-related issues, weight gain, and intense headaches. Additionally, nearly 45 per cent of tech professionals have revealed that their mental health is suffering, with stress, anxiety, and depression being prominent challenges.
The study also highlights the impact of these demanding work schedules on sleep patterns, with over 26 per cent of tech professionals experiencing exacerbated sleep patterns. More than half of them, approximately 51 per cent, reported getting only an average of 5.5 to 6 hours of sleep per day. Furthermore, a significant 74 per cent admitted to sacrificing family events and celebrations due to work demands, indicating the toll it takes on their personal lives.
Proactive Measures A Must
The aim of the study is to urge employers to take proactive measures to address these concerns, as employee well-being directly correlates with productivity, morale, and overall organisational success. Prioritising the implementation of initiatives to safeguard the health and well-being of tech employees is crucial in ensuring their optimal performance and overall satisfaction.
This study serves as a wake-up call for companies to reevaluate their approach towards employee wellness, particularly in the tech sector, where the workforce is particularly vulnerable to the detrimental effects of long work hours. By fostering a supportive work environment and promoting a healthy work-life balance, employers can mitigate the risks associated with burnout and contribute to the overall welfare of their employees.
