Videos Of Attacks On Migrants In Tamil Nadu 'Fake', Action Will Be Taken Against Rumour Mongers: Police

Police further said that an FIR has been registered and IP address of the person spreading such 'fake' videos is being traced.

New Delhi: Tiruppur administration and police clarified that the viral videos showing alleged attacks on migrant workers in Tamil Nadu are fake and action will be taken against the ones spreading such rumours.

According to reports, several videos circulated on the social media that indicated migrant workers from North India were leaving Tiruppur over alleged hostile attitude towards them.

“Tiruppur is a textile district and nearly 1.5 lakhs migrants, mostly from Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Bengal, are working here. No such incidents took place in all the other places. Only Tiruppur is being targeted,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Abhishek Gupta said.

“Don't believe in rumors. Legal action will be taken against those spreading rumours. Here the migrant population is doing well. No incident of attack has been reported,” the DCP added.

Police further said that an FIR has been registered and IP address of the person spreading such fake news is being traced.

The district collector said companies with workers from other states have been registering their details and a meeting with the companies and their human resources and labour departments was held regarding the safety of the workers.

The clarification of the police and district administration comes in the wake of a tweet by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who took note of the media reports on the videos and asked the state chief secretary and DGP to speak to officials in the Tamil Nadu government and ensure the safety of Bihar workers.

CM Nitish on Thursday had tweeted, “I have come to know through newspapers about attacks on laborers from Bihar working in Tamil Nadu. I have directed the chief secretary and director general of police of Bihar to talk to the officials of the Tamil Nadu government and ensure the safety of laborers from Bihar living there.”

Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav also tweeted, “DGP Tamil Nadu is categorically stating that it is completely baseless and rumour mongering that migrant workers of Bihar are being targeted in Tamil Nadu. Old video of violence is mischievously being spread stating people of Bihar are no longer safe in Tamil Nadu, creating panic.”
