On the occasion of 'Thai Pusam,' thousands of devotees gathered at Murugan temples across Tamil Nadu including Sri Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple in Palani and Subramaniya Swamy Temple, Tiruchendur, and the abode of Vallalar Sathya Gnana Sabai in Vadalur town to witness special darshan on Thursday. 'Thai Pusam', a Hindu Tamil festival, occurs on the Pusam star, aligning with the first full moon day of the Thai month.
















Thousands of devotees thronged Sathya Gnana Sabai on the occasion of 'Thai Pusam'. The 153rd Thai Pusa Jothi Dharshin was held in Vadalur Vallalar town.

The festival commemorates the triumph of the Hindu deity Murugan over the demon Surapadman, accomplished with a celestial spear gifted by Goddess Parvati. On this notable day, various rituals occur, such as devotees piercing their faces, tongues, or skin and walking to Lord Murugan temples across the state and some devotees walk on hot coals.

 

Certain devotees take 'Kavadi' (burden) like milk pots or a piece of wood in semi-circle shape to the temple.

 

'Thai Pusam' is also celebrated with religious fervor in Batu caves temple on outskirts of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. The festival is also celebrated in Singapore .
