Even earlier in February 2021, just before Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections, tension prevailed in the Mettupalayam district. The Coimbatore police arrested BJP functionary R Kalyanaraman as his speech led to tension.

The BJP leader gave a speech during a demonstration held to condemn the Social Democratic Party of India for “defaming” Prime Minister Narendra Modi by holding a protest on January 26. Following this, SDPI filed a complaint objecting to the protest.

All the more, Coimbatore has already witnessed a bomb blast that killed over 50 members. On February 14, 1998, a bomb blast targeting the then Deputy Prime Minister and senior BJP leader LK Advani took place, killing 58 people and injuring 200 members.

The miscreants planted 12 bombs which went off in 11 places of Coimbatore. The bomb blast was a retaliation to the communal clash that killed a police officer Selvaraj to death by Islamic outfit Al-Ummah.
