Chennai: The State Election Commission on Wednesday announced that the urban local body elections would be held in Tamil Nadu on February 19 and the counting of votes would take place on February 22. The polls that were last held in 2011 are set to take place in a single phase.
According to a report on PTI, State Election Commissioner V Palanikumar said, the nominations for the polls would begin on January 28 and would go on till February 4. The scrutiny of the nomination papers would take place on February 5 and the last day for withdrawing the nomination would be on February 7.
The votes would be counted on February 22 and the results would be announced on the same day. The elected members would take charge on March 2. The indirect election for mayor, deputy mayor, chairperson, and vice-chairperson of municipalities would be held on March 4.

The poll announcement comes after Madras High Court gave a nod to conduct the election by maintaining COVID-19 norms. The Court said it would monitor the conduct of the polls.
The SC earlier fixed a deadline to announce urban local body polls in four months with the deadline coming to an end on January 27.
With the election notification, polls are going to be conducted for 21 corporations, 138 municipalities, 490 town panchayats and 649 other urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu. The model code of conduct in the state was also put in place from Wednesday.
