Chennai: A history-sheeter, who was accused of sexual assault, was shot in his leg after he tried to flee from the custody of police in Madurai by throwing stones at them on Saturday. The history-sheeter along with his friend was arrested on Saturday after both of them sexually assaulted a woman by forcing her into a van at Anna Nagar in Madurai on Friday. 


According to a report on The New Indian Express, Anna Nagar (Law and Order) inspector, Senthilkumaran shot the primary accused 'Kuruvi' Vijay at his right leg when he tried to flee the scene while another suspect Karthi fell on the ground on hearing this and fractured his leg. The inspector also suffered injuries in the incident. 


All three of them are receiving treatment from Government Rajaji Hospital in Madurai.

The history-sheeters came under the radar after Vijay and Karthi waylaid a woman who was on her way to her uncle's home at 9 pm on Friday in Anna Nagar. They showed a knife and told her to get down then both of them kidnapped her and left the spot. On hearing this, people in the vicinity tried to stop them but they overpowered and left the spot. The duo then forced the woman into a van and sexually assaulted her. However, the woman's uncle then called the Anna Nagar police who rushed for help and rescued the woman. 


After the incident, the police team took the duo to the place where they kidnapped the woman. However, the duo soon started to pelt stones at the police and tried to escape the scene. Inspector Senthilkumaran took his gun and fired at Vijay's leg.


Vijay has 15 criminal cases including murder charges pending against him.
