Chennai: A Chinmaya Vidyalaya School teacher Mithun Chakravarthy has been arrested by the police on Friday after a 17-year-old girl killed herself in Coimbatore after leaving behind a suicide note naming him for alleged sexual abuse, on Thursday. After the demise of the girl, the parents and friends of the student also revealed that she was under severe stress due to the issue and even informed the school management but they failed to take action against the accused.
According to a report on ABP Nadu, the mother of the victim said that her daughter studied Class 11 in Chinmaya Vidyalaya and recently urged them to change her school. Following this, they changed her to another school in September.
However, the mother alleged that her daughter refused to tell the reason but now she learned that her daughter suffered sexual assaults and harassment by a teacher Mithun Chakravarthy in Chinmaya Vidyalaya. The mother also learned that the student has informed the school’s principal about the issue. Despite not taking action on the miscreant teacher, the headmistress asked the student to conceal this from parents. The school also arranged for a counseling session where they told her not to tell about the harassment and think of the incident similar to "someone bumping into her on a bus".

A friend of the girl said that Mithun started talking to the girl over chats after receiving her number. Whenever the girl's schedule got delayed, he would drop her home. In this backdrop, the teacher called the girl to a room in Auditorium in April and made her remove her top. He then sexually tortured the 17-year-old. The girl immediately complained to the headmistress but no action was taken against the teacher.
The school principal Jeyalakshmi talking about the suicide said that she was unaware of the incident since the family allegedly received a Transfer Certificate (TC) stating that they are going to Madurai. Hence, the school permitted TC to the student and Mithun also quit the school due to health issues.
The incident has sparked protests in Coimbatore.
The RS Puram All Women's Police Station registered a case under the POCSO Act against the teacher, including charges of abetment to suicide and punishment for aggravated sexual assault, and arrested him on Friday.
