Chennai: Tamil Nadu government’s proposed electricity tariff hike has come as a shocker to the public since the new tariff is expected to go up by 12% to 52% from September.
According to a report on Times of India, the people who were paying Rs 170 for 200 units as per the old tariff should now pay Rs 225. Those who were paying Rs 530 for 300 units should now pay Rs 675. Similarly, the people who use 400 and 500 units should pay Rs 295 and Rs 595 more respectively.
The other proposals of the electricity body include the plan to encourage consumers to give up free first 100 units. The professionals including doctors, engineers and lawyers can also use their 200 sqft home for work.
The subsidy to huts, handloom sectors and agriculture will also continue, said a report in New Indian Express.

TN Electricity Minister Senthil Balaji, announcing the proposed tariff revision after a meeting with TANGEDO officials said, the change was necessitated due to the huge loss incurred by the electricity body over the past 10 years.
Further, the proposal will be submitted to Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission

Meanwhile, domestic consumers who pay a bill above Rs 2,000 should pay the amount online.
However, DMK-led government remained muted on the promise made in the manifesto to make the bimonthly paying of exisiting electricity bills with a montly payment model and direct payment of bill to EB official that records electricity readings.
