Chennai: The Tamil Nadu government issued orders to stop the age-old caste-based practice of 'thandora' system for making important announcements of the state government. 'Thandora' involves people of select castes drumming and making public announcements.
According to a report on New Indian Express, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Irai Anbu wrote to all district collectors on Wednesday instructing them to ban the use of 'thandora' for making government announcements in the state.
Irai Anbu said, there is no need for a 'thandora' in the advent of science and technology.

The Chief Secretary said, the officials can attach megaphones to the vehicle and go around the village to make the announcements. He also told district collectors to inform panchayat leaders and to take action against those who defy it.

Over the years, the practice of using a 'thandora' was opposed by activists since it's linked with select castes.
After the announcement, VCK MP Ravikumar said, "Thandora practice is over. The demand I have been placing for the past 15 years has been fulfilled. I thank CM Stalin and Irai Aranbu for ending the odium."
