Chennai: Four workers were charred to death in a firecracker unit blast in Sivakasi on Saturday. Two other workers who were also present at the site at the time of the incident suffered severe injuries and have been shifted to a nearby hospital. The Sivakasi police fear that a few more people might have been trapped in the remains of the unit.


According to a report on ABP Nadu, Vizhividu Murugan was running a firecracker manufacturing unit in Puthupatti of Sivakasi district. On Saturday, even on New Year, the owner made the employees report for work.

Nearly 30 people reported for work on Saturday and they started to make firecrackers when suddenly there was an explosion in the factory. Four persons who were near the mishap site died on the spot while two others suffered serious injuries and were shifted to the nearby government hospital.


The people residing in nearby areas immediately rushed fire tenders for help. 


A police personnel talking to ABP Nadu said, Vizhividu Murugan was producing more number of 'fancy' firecrackers which led to friction and the subsequent blast. Till now, four people have been reported dead while two others who sustained severe injuries were rescued."

Ten more people are feared to be trapped in the site, he said.


The police have started the investigation and a case will soon be registered against the owner and other persons responsible for the mishap.
