Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin announced an extension of lockdown for a week but with few relaxations. The lockdown with relaxations in 27 districts of the state will come into place from June 7 (Monday) till 6 AM on June 14. Accordingly, grocery, vegetable, and meat shops will be allowed to open from 6 AM to 5 PM in the lesser affected areas of the state.






On Friday, Tamil Nadu has recorded 22,651 cases while 463 people succumbing to the deadly virus. There has been a steep fall of Covid cases in the state. An official release stated that the activities which were permitted earlier will continue to be open in all the districts.

Chief Minister MK Stalin stated that, albeit the overall numbers have come down, 11 districts —Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Erode, Salem, The Nilgiris, Karrurm Namakkal, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai — have been facing the wrath of the highest number of Covid cases. In these districts also there is relaxation to meet the essential requirements.


The sale of vegetables, fruits, and flowers on the pavements will be allowed from 6 AM to 5 PM. The release stated that the fish markets will be open and the district administrators should look for alternate set up for open spaces to ensure social distancing in the market.


All the government offices will be permitted with 30 per cent of staff. Match factories will be permitted with a 50 per cent workforce.

Going with the dip in caseload, the government has announced additional relaxations:



  • Private security and housekeeping works are allowed with e-registration.

  • Electricians, Plumbers, Carpenters, and Motor technicians will be allowed from 6 AM – 5 PM with e-registrations.

  • Shops: Electrical goods, bicycle, and two-wheeler repair, hardware shops, books, and stationary centres will be allowed between 6 AM - 5 PM.

  • Three passengers are allowed in rental Taxis while two passengers in auto-rickshaws will be allowed to commute with e-registration.

  • E-Pass from district collectors is required to travel to all the tourism spots in the state.

  • Exports units and the vendors providing inputs will be allowed to work with a 10 per cent workforce.

  • Sales of vegetables and fruits in mobile vehicles will continue.
