Chennai: The bear which attacked three people in Kadayam of Tenkasi district died on Tuesday due to a lung-related illness.  The bear was tranquilized, caught by the Forest Department officials on Monday and was shifted to Kalakkad forest region before the time of death.

On Saturday, a wild bear attacked three persons in the forest areas of Tenkasi district. First, the animal attacked a man, Vaigundamani from Karuthilingapuram, who was on his way carrying masala packets on two-wheelers from Sivasailam to Pethanpillai.

The bear which was hiding near a bush jumped on him and pushed him onto the ground. The animal then attacked him and bit him.

The commuters on seeing this, altered the villagers who threw stones at the bear to chase it. However, the animal did not leave the place. 


A group of people gathered around it to shoo the animal, however, the bear attacked and injured two persons in the mob. The persons have been identified as Nagendran and Sailendra.


All the injured have been admitted to Tirunelveli Government Medical College Hospital.


Based on the information of the public, the forest department tranquilized the animal. They then captured it and took the animal to Kalakkad forest area.


However, the villagers still staged a protest against the officials for not maintaining the solar fences and digging trenches to keep animals away.

Deputy Superintendent of Police Alangulam Ponnarasu, Tenkasi Tahsildar Athinarayanan and forest Ranger Karunamoorthy reached the spot. They assured the people that measures will be taken to catch the bear. Following this, the people dispersed from the spot.
