Chennai: Police department has intensified security measures in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli to ensure law and order after the district reported five consecutive murders including two caste killings this week.


Inspector General of Police (IGP) for South Zone TS Anbu held a meeting with the Tirunelveli district collector V Vishnu and police officials at the Tirunelveli district officials on Thursday to discuss the measures need to be taken to maintain law and order in the district. 


Anbu had visited the affected villages and assured them to take speedy action in the murder cases. He also appealed to the villagers to bring an end to the casteist murders as they have been disturbing peace and harmony in the region. 


Speaking to reporters, the IG said that they had deployed about 1,500 police officials to maintain law and order in the tension hit areas where murders took place.

Tirunelveli Superintendent of Police, Manivannan has been visiting villagers and creating awareness about the importance of maintaining communal harmony in the region.  


According to a report in IANS, Sankara Subramanian, 27, a caste Hindu, was murdered by a gang from SC community on Monday night. Police officials said that the murder was done in retaliation to a murder that was committed on an SC member, Manthiram, in 2013. Sankara Subramanian was beheaded and his head was placed on the grave of Manthiram. 


The report further said, in retaliation to the murder, a gang from caste Hindu beheaded a SC man, Mariappan, 35, on Wednesday morning and his head was placed on the grave of Sankara Subramanian. Quoting the police officials, the report said that Mariappan was accused in a caste killing case in 2014. 


The report further said that while police had arrested six people in connection with the murder of Sankara Subramanian, eight people were arrested for the murder of Mariappan.
