Chennai: In view of continuous rainfall, the district collectors have declared holiday for a day for schools and colleges of Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts on Thursday. 


According to ANI, District Collectors said, "In view of continuous rain, holiday announced for a day in schools and colleges of Nagapattinam and Thiruvarur districts."

In Tamil Nadu, the India Meteorological Department said that rainfall occurred at isolated places over Tamil Nadu and very light rain occurred over Karaikal district on Wednesday. 


The highest rainfall of 4 cm was received in Kodiayakarai (dist Nagapattinam) followed by 3 cm in Vedaranyam (dist Nagapattinam), Velankanni (dist Nagapattinam), Thalaignayer (dist Nagapattinam) and 2 cm in Tirupoondi (dist Nagapattinam).


On the depression, the IMD said, "The depression over Southwest Bay of Bengal moved slowly Southwestwards with speed of 4 KMPH during the past 6 hours and lay centered at 1800 UTC of 1 st February 2023 over the southwest bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast near latitude 8.1°N and longitude 82.1°E, about 60 km northeast of Batticaloa (Sri Lanka), 115 km east-southeast of Trincomalee (Sri Lanka) and 400 km southeast of Karaikal (India).”


“It is very likely to move nearly west-southwestwards and cross Sri Lanka coast between Batticaloa and Trincomalee around 2100 UTC of 01st February 2023 to 0000 UTC of 2nd February 2023,” it said.

Meanwhile, the IMD also predicted heavy rain over one or two places in Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Ramanathapuram and Tenkasi districts of Tamilnadu. Light to moderate rain in many places with thunderstorms and lightning at one or two places over south Tamilnadu on Thursday.
