Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on Saturday said that the funerals of organ donors who donate before death will be conducted with state honor in order to respect their sacrifice and for saving many lives through the donation. Taking to X, Stalin said, "Tamil Nadu continues to be the leading state in the country in giving life to hundreds of patients through organ donation."


"This achievement has been made possible by the selfless sacrifices of families who come forward to donate their organs in the tragic situation of brain-dead family members," he said. 


Further, the CM said that the funeral of donors who donate their organs before death will be conducted with state honor.

Stalin said, "In order to honor the sacrifice of those who donated their organs and saved many lives, the funerals of organ donors before death will now be conducted with state honor!"


On September 23, 2008, a doctor couple named Dr. Pushpanjali and Dr. Ashokan donated the organs of their adolescent son Hitendran who was pronounced brain dead in a private hospital in Chennai. This donation took place fifteen years ago. The donation served as the first of many that followed in the state. In Tennessee, the day is recognised as Organ Donation Day, as reported by Times of India.


TN Health Minister released a musical tribute to honour the donors at Kalaivanar Aragam. 


Till now, there are 13 organ transplant units in Government Medical colleges in TN. The organ transplant and post-transplant medical requirements are covered under state health insurance funds.
