New Delhi: Omicron cases in Tamil Nadu have gone up to 34 after 33 people, whose samples were sent for genome sequencing after testing positive for Covid-19, have tested for the recent variant of coronavirus, said state Health and Family Welfare Minister Ma Subramanian. Earlier, one person has been tested for the variant from the state.


"The Omicron patients are in stable condition and results of the genome sequencing of 23 persons are awaited," said the health minister as quoted by ANI news agency.


A total of 236 people tested positive for the Omicron variant in the country so far, of which at least 65 cases are from Maharashtra and 64 have been reported from Delhi. Followed by Telangana, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Kerala and Gujarat.

Besides Tamil Nadu, Telangana has also reported a big surge in Omicron cases on Wednesday as 14 people have tested positive for the recent variant of Coronavirus taking the tally of the state to 38.


Meanwhile, the country has witnessed an 18 per cent rise in the Covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours with 7,495 people testing positive for the deadly virus. According to Union Health Ministry, the active caseload in the country has gone up to 78,291 cases.
