Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Muthuvel Karunanidhi Stalin on Thursday accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of using the matter of a uniform civil code [UCC] for electoral gains. He said that PM Modi is only trying to fuel religious tensions to win elections. "He [PM Modi] said that a uniform civil code will be implemented and said that there should not be two laws in our country. He is looking to escalate religious conflicts and confuse people to win [elections]. I am sure, people will teach a lesson to the BJP in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections," Stalin was quoted as saying by news agency ABP.

Stalin is the latest in the list of Opposition leaders lashing out at PM Modi for advocating a uniform civil law across the country. Earlier, parties like the Congress, the Shiv Sena (UBT), the AIMIM, and the JD(U) accused the Prime Minister of raising the matter of a UCC to divert attention from pressing issues, such as inflation and unemployment.

 

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday advocated the implementation of a UCC, saying that there cannot be different sets of laws for the same people in the country. "How will the country run with different laws? People are only being instigated in the name of the Uniform Civil Code. Two types of laws cannot run the country. The Constitution of India also talks about equal rights for the citizens," he said at a rally in Bhopal. This earned him the wrath of the Opposition.

While the Congress accused the BJP of ignoring important matters like unemployment, inflation, and the situation in Manipur, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi challenged the Prime Minister to abolish the Hindu Undivided Family (HUF) law, which, he claimed, cost the country billions of rupees annually.

 

The Aam Aadmi Party, however, has lent its "in-principle" support to the pitch for a UCC. At the same time, the AAP cautioned against an "authoritarian" implementation of such a law.
