Chennai: The Madras High Court has ordered a youth who drove a four-wheeler in an inebriated state and injured three pedestrians to distribute pamphlets against drunk-driving on busy streets for the next two weeks. The HC gave the direction while hearing a bail petition of the youngster.
On August 23, the youth was arrested for causing injuries to three pedestrians while driving his four-wheeler under the influence of alcohol.
According to a report on PTI, Justice Jagadish Chandra gave the direction while granting bail to the youth. He also ordered the youth to pay Rs 25,000 with two sureties to the satisfaction of IV Metropolitan Magistrate in Saidapet.
Earlier, the prosecution contended that the petitioner drove the vehicle in a rash and negligent manner and hit the three pedestrians. He also immediately fled the scene.

Yet, the judge granted him conditional bail by considering the fact that he has a family to take care of. He also observed that the three injured persons received treatment and got discharged from the hospital.
However, the court said that the petitioner should report before Adyar police station for two weeks every day and distribute pamphlets from 9-10 am and 5-7 pm.

The judge said, “The petitioner shall report before the respondent police, every day at 9.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m., and he shall distribute the pamphlets against "Drunken Driving" at the LB Road Junction, Chennai every day from 9.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. and 5.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m., for a period of two weeks and thereafter, report before the respondent Police as and when required.”
