Chennai: Violent scenes emerged in Krishnagiri after hundreds of villagers blocked the Chennai-Bengaluru national highway and pelted stones at vehicles taking the route after the district administration allegedly refused to give permission for holding a bull race in the district on Thursday.
On Thursday, hundreds of villagers blocked the Chennai-Bengaluru national highway and pelted stones on buses and police vehicles after the Krishnagiri district administration refused to give permission for the bull race sport ‘eruthu vidum thiruvizha.’
The villagers also held a violent protest by climbing over the vehicles.
Earlier, the bull race event was organised in Gopasandaram area near Hosur in Krishnagiri district to mark the harvest season. However, on the day of the event, the police stopped the organisers from conducting the bull-taming event. The police also told the organisers that they were allegedly denied permission for the festival.
Irked by the statement of the police, the public who were gathered for the event immediately blocked the Chennai-Bangalore National Highway. They also started pelting stones at vehicles passing on that road. In the commotion, four government buses and a police vehicle were damaged by the protesters.

The protest also affected traffic movement in the region for over 2 hours. The protesters also refused to leave the place even after policemen had a word with them.
Following this, police resorted to batons and water cannons charges to disperse the protestors. They also used tear gas bombs to disperse the crowd. Later, the police restored vehicular movement in that area. Slowly normalcy is also returning in the region.

Meanwhile, Krishnagiri district Collector also gave the nod for conducting the ‘eruthu vidum thiruvizha.
