Chennai: The resident of Belgavi found seven aborted fetal remains in the drains on the outskirts of the Moodalagi village of Karnataka's Belagavi district on Friday, according to the police. The police and health officials suspect that the fetuses might have been dumped as a result of illegal abortions carried out by healthcare hospitals in the vicinity.
According to a report on PTI, the local found the fetuses near the Mudalagi town's bus stop in the Belagavi district and informed the police. After receiving the information, police visited and inspected the site.
They also registered a case in this regard and have started the investigation.

Dr Mahesh Koni, District Health and Family Welfare Officer as per PTI told media persons, "Seven fetuses were found in a canister. Five-month-old embryos were found to have fetal sex detection and murder. A team of officials will be formed and investigated immediately after informing the district authorities."
He further said that the detected embryos might have been stored in a hospital and then brought to the District Functional Science Center for testing.

He also said, the fetuses might have also been dumped as a result of illegal abortions after the gender determination of the baby in the health facilities in the vicinity.
Six maternity hospitals and scanning centres in Mudalagi town will be verified to know if they were a part of the racket, he said.
A team under Deputy Commissioner is working towards the prevention of pre-natal sex determination, he said.
The Asha workers are also used for the service.
