Chennai: A 15-year-old girl who was bitten by a snake while she was asleep died of snakebite in Panaiyur of Kancheepuram on Wednesday. Her father who found the snake killed the reptile but went back to sleep believing that it would not have bitten her.
The deceased was N Deepa, a 15-year-old girl of Kulakarai Street in Panaiyur, who was studying in Class 9 at a government school in Panruti, said a report on Times of India.
On Wednesday, she was asleep on her bed and around 5 am she started to toss on the bed. She then told her parents that something bit her. However, the parents thought that it was ants.

Later, her father Narayanan looked around and found a common krait near the bed. He immediately killed the snake but went back to sleep unaware that it bit his daughter.
Sometime later, Narayanan found her daughter remaining motionless so he turned her around to find her face swollen and frothing in the mouth. The family immediately rushed her to a primary healthcare center and later to Chengalpet Government Hospital. However, she died without responding to treatment.

The Oragadam police have registered a case. The police suspect that the snake would have been hiding in the brick walls of the family’s dilapidated home.
The preliminary inquiry also revealed that it was common for the villagers to spot snakes in the vicinity.
