Actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan presented a car to Coimbatore's first woman driver, who quit her job as a private bus driver, after a difference of opinion cropped up between the management and her over providing a ticket to DMK MP Kanimozhi. In a statement, Kamal Haasan said that the gift was aimed at enabling Sharmila to become a driver-entrepreneur.
Kamal Haasan said that Sharmila should not remain a mere driver but inspire thousands of Sharmilas. He said, the car was donated on behalf of Kamal Cultural Centre, as per a report on India Today.
The MNM chief said that Sharmila would resume her journey as a rental car driver cum entrepreneur and he wishes to stand next to women and help them break the barriers that have been suppressing them for years.
On June 23, MP Kanimozhi took a bus driven by Sharmila plying between Gandhipuram and Somanur in Coimbatore. However, hours after the travel, Sharmila quit her job due to an indifference with the management.
Sharmila told the media that she quit her job since the conductor asked Kanimozhi to take a ticket even after telling them not to ask her. She said that when she raised the issue to the bus owner he did not support her.
She said that she gave up on her dream job since her colleague disrespected DMK MP. The management also accused her of seeking publicity by inviting prominent personalities to travel in a bus.
Sharmila told the media that she intimated to the management about Kanimozhi's proposed visit and could not "digest the disrespect" done to her. However, the transport firm denied about being informed about Kanimozhi's visit. They also said that Sharmila left the job on her own.
