Chennai: DMK Rajya Sabha MP NR Elango's son Rakesh died in a freak road accident near Kottakuppam in Villupuram district on Thursday morning. Rakesh's friend who was travelling with him suffered serious injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital in Puducherry.
The accident took place at 3.45 am, reported IANS. The vehicle was bearing a registration number TN-02-CC-1000.
As per preliminary inquiry, the MP's son was traveling to Puducherry in the wee hours of Thursday. While nearing Kottakuppam, Rakesh reportedly was speeding the car when a cow passed in between and while he tried to divert the car he suddenly lost control and hit a divider at Kil Puthupet on East Coast Road.
The vehicle rammed into the median, crashed and immediately toppled. In the impact, Rakesh died on the spot while his friend sustained severe injuries.

The local residents who were nearby immediately alerted the fire and rescue personnel. The personnel rushed to the spot and cut open the vehicle to pull out the body.
Rakesh's friend was taken to Pondicherry Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) at Kangachettikulam in Puducherry for treatment. The fire personnel then removed the mangled remains of the car from the spot.
NR Elangovan, a former senior advocate, became a Rajya Sabha member from Tamil Nadu in 2020. This is his first-term in office. The police are conducting further investigation into the case.
