The stage is set up for the inauguration of 44th Chess Olympiad at Nehru Stadium, Chennai. The inauguration will begin after PM Modi reaches the venue at 6 pm.

Stating that this is a special tournament, PM Modi said, "I am looking forward to being in Chennai for the inauguration of the 44th Chess Olympiad at 6 PM tomorrow evening. It is our honour that it is being held in India, that too in Tamil Nadu, which has a glorious association with chess."
Around 150 underprivileged students of government schools flew from Chennai to Bengaluru in a special SpiceJet flight and played chess for the promotions of the event.
In a tweet, Rajinikanth said, "#ChessOlympiad2022 An indoor game I love the most … wishing all the chess minds the very best .. god bless."
The guests will be served 700 dishes from 77 menu cards and none of the main items will be repeated, said the chef who curated the menu. The menu has a mix of Asian, Indian and European cuisines.

Chennai: India is set to host a Chess Olympiad tournament for the first time in its history from July 28 to August 10 in Chennai. The 44th Chess Olympiad 2022 will be inaugurated by PM Modi in Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Chennai on Thursday and the tournament will be held till August 10 at Poonjeri village in Mamallapuram.
The championship was originally scheduled to take place in Russia but due to Russia-Ukraine war, International Chess Federation (FIDE) decided to change the location. Among the bidders, India emerged a topper and got the opportunity to host the high-profile event. Later, Union government awarded the rights to Tamil Nadu.

On June 19, PM Modi flagged off the first-ever torch relay aimed to be taken to 75 cities for Chess Olympiad.
Tamil Nadu government launched a teaser video of the event, buses 'Namma Chess, Namma Pride' and gave a complete makeover to Napier Bridge.

Meanwhile, top contenders in Chess, Russia and China, are not participating in the event. Therefore, India has decided to field three teams each in the open and women's sections. Five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand has decided to mentor the players instead of participating in the competition.
The audience can book the ticket by logging into https://tickets.aicf.in./. The ticket price for Hall 2 is Rs 2,000 for one person while for a foreigner it is Rs 6,000. The ticket for Hall 1 with the top-ranking team is Rs 3,000 and foreigners need to pay Rs 8,000.
