Around six fishermen who were released from a Sri Lankan prison arrived in Chennai on Tuesday. They had been arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on January 23 for crossing the maritime boundary line while fishing mid-sea.
According to ANI, 6 fishermen from Tamil Nadu who were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy on January 23rd were released by the Sri Lankan Government. The fishermen reached Chennai Airport this morning where they were received by fisheries department officials.
Last month, Sri Lanka Navy reported that the fishermen were arrested and their two trawlers were seized north of Delft Island, Jaffna. The six arrested fishermen were escorted to the Kankasanthurai Harbour and will be handed over to the Mailadi Fisheries Inspector for further action, according to a press release.
The Palk Strait, a narrow stretch of water that separates Tamil Nadu from Sri Lanka, serves as a fertile fishing ground for fishermen from both countries.
