Chennai: Parents Blame Doctors For Amputating Child's Arm, Govt Says 'No Medical Negligence'

Health Minister Ma Subramanian said, there was no negligence on the part of the doctors and the medical inquiry report will come on Tuesday.

A day after a one-and-half-year-old baby had its right hand amputated, the parents of the baby blamed the doctors of Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for medical negligence while the Minister said that there was no medical negligence on the part of doctors and nurses of the hospital.

According to The Hindu, a pre-term baby Mohammed Makir was admitted to the hospital for severe hydrocephalus at five months and was provided Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt treatment. However, the shunt was ejected recently. As a result, the parents of Makir, Dastagir Meera and his wife Abdul Azeesa, rushed him to the hospital and surgery was performed on the child.

Five days ago, the surgical team removed the shunt from the anus and replaced it with a new one. However, the mother of the baby found out that the baby's right hand started to turn black. This indicated an acute thrombosis, an obstruction in the blood flow. In order to treat the issue, the doctors decided to amputate the child's right arm.

After the surgery, the parents said that the medical negligence of nurses and doctors resulted in the amputation of the child's hand.

On Thursday, the mother of the baby told India Today that the baby was admitted on Sunday and an epilepsy shot was given to the child on Thursday. However, after getting the shot, the child cried but the duty nurses failed to attend to the baby.

The mother said that the discolouration started in the hand where the needle was administered. However, she said that the doctors did not pay heed for three days.

After 3 days, she said that the doctors informed the family that the child's arm should be amputated.

Meanwhile, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said, there was no negligence on the part of the doctors and the medical inquiry report will come on Tuesday. The Minister also visited the child and the parents.
