Three women passengers were injured after college students hurled stones at Chennai-Tirupathi Express train in order to attack students of another college on Tuesday. The incident took place when the train was halted between Besan Bridge railway station and Vyasarpadi station. The incident took place when the students of Presidency College hurled stones at Pachaiyappas College.


Initial investigations found that the incident involved a group of students from two city colleges. According to a senior railway police officer, additional police officers have been stationed at all suburban and significant railway stations to stop students from fighting, as per a report on DT Next.


Some of the stones hurled by the students hit the train and fell while a few stones hit the passengers.


A witness told Times of India that stones were pelted from nowhere and some of them passed through the window. They said that some stones even hit passengers. Three passengers were injured in the incident. 


The passengers did not file any police complaint but Railway Protection Force registered a case for the damaged railway properties.


The police have also made a list of students who are frequent offenders and sent them to the colleges for taking action against them. 


In April 2023, a passenger on Pothigai Express suffered a head injury after unidentified assailants hurled stones at the train in Madurai. When the train crossed the Maravankulam area near Thirumangalam, the passengers traveling in the general compartment of the train heard noises of things striking against the windows.

T Senthilkumar, the superintendent of police for the railways, mandated an investigation into the incident. An investigation was conducted in places like Maravankulam, Kappalur, Tirumangalam, etc. by a special police team. Additionally, local CCTV footage was also examined.
